Skips For Summer Waste Clearance
It might not have been the warmest May for us in the UK, but summer is right around the corner with the promise of longer days and better weather. That means it’s a great time to start thinking about all the outdoor projects you’ve been putting off.
With a year spent mostly indoors and uncertainty remaining around travel, giving your home the attention it has been craving will help to keep you busy, freeing up more of your time when you are finally allowed to travel again. To help you get an idea of the different projects you can undertake, as well as relevant skip sizes for your waste, we’ve put together a handy guide of summer waste clearance projects.
What size skip do I need?
Knowing how you’ll deal with any waste is important before you start. It means you’ll have a way to keep your property tidy and you won’t fall foul of your neighbours or the law. Here are some of the projects many people are likely to get stuck into this summer:
Garden Maintenance
Getting your garden ready for the summer? We’re all looking forward to being able to welcome friends, family and neighbours over for a barbecue or a few drinks, but that means giving your garden some TLC. Hedgerows will need trimming, weeds need to be dug out, trellises need painting and furniture needs a good thorough washing. Hiring a skip can help you get rid of all your leaves, branches, grass and other trimmings in one clean sweep without multiple trips to the tip muddying your car.
Recommended skip size: Mini skip 2 yards (45 bags of waste)
Shed Clearance
Cobwebs and dust might cover everything at this point, but a good clear out of your shed will leave room for new tools, summer furniture and anything else you’ve been hoping to store but haven’t had space for. Anything that has rusted, hasn’t been used in decades or that the kids haven’t played with in years can probably be disposed of via a skip, just be aware that old paints and solvents can’t be disposed of this way.
Recommended skip size: Mini skip 2 yards (45 bags of waste)
Garage Clearance
Similar to your shed, your garage might be the place where you store all of your tools, toys and assorted junk items you’ve forgotten about. Create some space – maybe even enough to turn the space into a home office or gym? – by hiring a skip where you can easily dispose of these things. If you have old bicycles you’re looking to get rid of, try advertising them or donating them via a local cause to see if they can be given a second lease of life.
Recommended skip size: Midi skip 4 yards (85 bags of waste)
Garden Landscaping
If a simple garden spruce isn’t going to get your space ready for entertaining, you might be looking to undertake a larger landscaping challenge. Whether you’re replacing fencing, adding a decking area for seating or digging up large areas of your lawn for more planting space, make sure you have a skip at the ready to handle all of the soil, timber and rubble you’re likely to generate.
Recommended skip size: Maxi skip 6 yards (123 bags of waste)
Home Extension
Looking for a project to sink your teeth into? A home extension or adding a balcony can add some much-needed space or give you a gateway to your garden. If you’re tackling some of the work yourself, you’re likely going to need a skip that can take all of the rubble, hardcore and building materials created once things get underway. Choosing the right skip size is going to help keep work on track, but you might even need more than one skip if you’re going big with your plans.
Recommended skip size: Monsta skip 12 yards (250 bags of waste)
With all of the above projects, there will likely be items you’ll come across that cannot be placed in a skip, such as paints, tree roots and old batteries. You can find a full article detailing what can’t go in a skip on our resource centre. Make sure you know what waste can and can’t go in a skip before hiring, as your skip provider may refuse to take the waste if it is deemed to be contaminated.
Whatever it is that you’re doing that ends up producing waste, the important thing is that you don’t fly tip waste. Fly tipping is a blight on any landscape, creates environmental hazards and could see you hit with a huge fine. You can read more about this in our previous post on fly tipping.
